One of Educators' Biggest Enemies ...

... is summer break.  Take the kiddies out of school for 8 weeks and you'll see a retention (memory) decay (forgetting) that won't wait.  Having to 'catch students up' at the beginning of school each year is quite laborious.

A good number of students have the privilege of being involved in summer activities and some of their parents make sure they read a lot while on break.  Unfortunately, the reading activity appears to be on a downslide whereas summer recreational activities seem to be on the upswing, but not always educationally-oriented (e.g., latest gaming software, downloadable / cable & satellite movies).

The solution?  Year-round schooling.  This, however, is a topic / debate for a later time.
